Things to Watch For

THINGS TO WATCH FOR

AND

PRACTICE WITH YOUR CHILD:

Here are some ways you can help your child have a great year:

  • Celebrate

Celebrate your child’s success, no matter how small it may seem.  This will keep your child enthusiastic about learning and proud of his/her work. Share your success with family, friends, and neighbors.  Let your child know how proud you are of their accomplishments and why.  Show your child how much you care about their progress!

  • Look at your child’s papers

Check your child’s backpack EVERY evening.  As daunting as it may seem, try to sort through the papers and read each one carefully.  They often contain important information and reminders.    Your child should come to school the next day with a relatively empty backpack—just homework or notes to his or her teachers in his/her agenda book!  (Correct as many papers as you can & talk about them together.)

Students will not receive traditional letter grades for their work; instead, all work will be graded on a rubric with a rating scale that indicates their progress and mastery of a specific skill. For example, 4, 3, 2, 1.  Most work in kindergarten is completed with guided help.  This provides immediate feedback to support individualized learning.

  • Read with your child

Read to and with your child every day, if possible.  The more your child is exposed to language, the easier it will be for him/her to incorporate new skills in reading and writing in the classroom.

When schools work together with families to support learning, children tend to succeed not just in school, but also.

But also throughout life.
